Fans of classic firearms will find it hard to resist the SSD-BD-38 hunting carbine, a functional replica of the German MP38 submachine gun, commonly known as the “Schmeisser”. This replica is manufactured as a semi automatic rifled firearm, and conversion to full automatic fire is structurally impossible. Most of the design solutions closely follow the MP38, including the machining of the bolt, receiver, and magazine well, as well as the stamped stock support, pistol grip base, and trigger. The exterior surface finish has been intentionally made rougher to closely resemble the original MP38. The handguard is produced from hardened phenolic resin, Bakelite, sourced from the same manufacturer that supplied the material decades ago. The period correct magazine holds 32 rounds with a capacity limiter installed, but the firearm uses a different caliber, the pistol cartridge 9x21 IMI instead of the original 9x19 Parabellum used in the MP38. This cartridge is suitable for hunting roe deer or young wild boar. As with the historical MP38, the BD38 operates on a simple blowback system with a fixed barrel. The folding stock support, pistol grip base, and trigger are manufactured using stamped components. The pistol grip panels are riveted, replicating the original design. The external finish of the BD38 has been carefully matched to the historical reference, with certain surfaces intentionally machined in a rougher style using modern CNC equipment to replicate the original grinding and shaping marks. The markings are preserved almost entirely, with the obvious exception of prohibited symbols. The handguard is made of Bakelite obtained from a supplier that provided this material for military firearms over 70 years ago. The carbine is supplied with one period correct 32 round magazine fitted with a capacity limiter. As the replica is designed for the civilian market, it lacks a full automatic firing mode, and the trigger mechanism is blocked when the stock is folded, bringing the overall length to the legally required 800 mm. Unlike the original MP38 chambered in 9x19 Parabellum, the BD38 is produced in 9x21 IMI, a closely related cartridge that prevents the use of ammunition intended for prohibited military firearms. The BD38 version for our market fires from a closed bolt rather than from an open bolt as on the historical prototype, which has a positive effect on accuracy and shot grouping.
