High-quality Damascus steel surpasses many other steel types such as 65Х13, 440C, and 95Х18 in cutting performance. Its only drawback is susceptibility to corrosion, which means the blade requires regular care. After use, the knife should be wiped dry, lightly coated with neutral oil or grease, and stored properly. If rust spots appear, they should be removed using very fine sandpaper with oil or kerosene. In general, caring for such a knife is no more demanding than maintaining a firearm with non-chromed barrels.
All maintenance efforts are fully compensated by exceptional cutting performance that surpasses most stainless steels. The secret of Damascus steel lies primarily in its manufacturing process. Damascus is produced through a long, fully manual forging process. Several types of steel, both hard and soft, are layered in a specific sequence to form a billet. The exact steel grades are not disclosed, as the true quality of Damascus steel depends on the correct selection and proportion of metals. A key principle is that hard steels are used in greater proportion than softer ones.
