The legendary Desert Eagle .50AE pistol was developed in 1980 by the American company Magnum Research, then sent for refinement to Israel Military Industries, and five years later, the first mass production batch of this firearm was released. Since it was designed for the .50AE caliber, the pistol has an unconventional construction: its slide and locking system are based on the principle of the M16 assault rifle. To make it possible to use such powerful ammunition, a gas-operated system with a piston was implemented. This feature defined the pistol’s characteristic massive silhouette, making it one of the most recognizable handguns in the world. Its substantial size, weight of nearly 2 kg, extremely strong recoil, and need for meticulous maintenance could have limited its popularity — yet decades later, it remains just as sought-after on the civilian market. This is because it is, in fact, the most powerful semi-automatic pistol among all serial models, with a muzzle energy of almost 2,500 J and truly impressive stopping power. It is equally striking for recreational shooting and for its intended purpose — hunting large game. Contrary to myths, it is not particularly suited for combat missions and is not an armor-piercing pistol, but it can cause massive damage even to a target wearing body armor. More than anything, the Desert Eagle .50AE is famous as the “movie pistol.” Its image is inseparable from action stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, and Mickey Rourke, later passing into the hands of Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith — after which the demand for the “Desert Eagle” soared even higher.
