The TOZ-57 is a family of sporting shotguns produced by the Tula Arms Plant from 1978 to 1985. These firearms were designed for specialized use, which resulted in specific differences in barrel construction. The TOZ-57 12 gauge sporting shotgun features vertically arranged barrels and high quality engraving. Notably, the TOZ-57 is a model that is highly unified with the TOZ-34 hunting shotgun. The main differences are found in the reinforced locking system and the barrel assembly.
The TOZ-57 was developed for trap shooting, including trench trap variants TOZ-57t-1s and TOZ-57t-12e, as well as for skeet shooting with the TOZ-57k-1s version. The model was produced in small batches and intended for use by mass sporting organizations. The barrels are separate and arranged in a vertical plane, with chrome plated bores. The connection and locking of the barrels to the receiver are achieved through ring hinges, a locking frame, and lugs on the barrel monoblock engaging corresponding slots in the receiver.
The introduction of additional engagement surfaces on the barrel lugs significantly strengthened the locking system, greatly increasing the guaranteed service life of the shotgun. The trigger mechanism with internal hammers and a single trigger is mounted on a separate base. The advantages of single trigger mechanisms in double barrel sporting shotguns are well known, which is why their use has become increasingly widespread.
The mechanism used in the TOZ-57t-1s was developed at the Tula Arms Plant in 1977. It is a non selective system that allows firing only in a fixed sequence: first from the lower barrel and then from the upper barrel. Switching from the lower to the upper barrel after the shot is performed mechanically and operates independently of recoil. An inertial disconnector is used to prevent double firing during recoil, and autonomous sear interceptors are incorporated to eliminate accidental discharges.
Sporting shotguns of this type are not equipped with a safety or cocking indicators. Spent shells are extracted from the chambers by a single extractor. The fore end is non detachable and secured to the barrels with screws.
