The Norma 6.5 Jap. Alaska SP 156 gr rifle cartridge is also known as the 6.5 X 51 R (ARISAKA). In 1897, the Japanese army adopted this cartridge, but found the rifle in service at the time to be unsafe and replaced it in 1905 with the model 38 Arisaka rifle. The European designation 6.5x50R for this hunting cartridge indicates that the case has a (semi) rim, making it the shortest of the many 6.5mm military cartridges from the late 19th century. The smaller powder capacity of the shortened case gives this cartridge a somewhat lower muzzle velocity. However, when used with modern rifled firearms, the cartridge can reach its full potential and thus recover some of its lost original performance. The Norma 6.5 Jap. Alaska SP 156 gr rifle cartridge is an excellent choice for hunting small to medium sized game. Norma is currently the sole supplier of brass for this cartridge. The "Alaska" rifle cartridge is a classic among Scandinavian moose hunters, and this line includes the most common calibers for moose hunting. On impact, the bullet produces rapid and substantial mushroom expansion.
