Merkel drillings are consistently popular among hunters in many countries. This is one of the most versatile and reliable types of hunting firearms, as hunting with a shotgun often requires a bullet shot, and after hunting big game, there may be an opportunity to shoot a hare or bird with pellets. Drillings first appeared in Germany long ago, with the first patent dating back to 1868, and nearly all German gun manufacturers produce them. Today, nearly 70 models of Merkel drillings are known—both hammer and hammerless versions, with Anson-Deeley-type locks or sideplate locks. This particular Merkel drilling was created for big-game hunters who need two reliable rifle shots and an occasional shotgun round. It features a barrel block with two rifled barrels horizontally aligned and a lower smoothbore barrel underneath. The rifled barrels are chambered in 9.3x74R, and the smoothbore barrel is 16 gauge. One of the key advantages of this Merkel combination gun is its superb combination of a short lock and smooth trigger pull, enabling the shooter to hit targets accurately and safely. Owners of such guns can quickly and effectively engage various types of game. Thanks to the single-lock system with manual cocking lever on the stock neck, the firearm can be aimed uncocked and cocked immediately before firing. A new, slimmer receiver design makes the modern generation of Merkel drillings lighter and more elegant. This drilling, equipped for driven hunts, includes one shotgun barrel and two rifle barrels. The front trigger, acting as a single trigger, controls both upper rifled barrels and allows for rapid second shots without switching. The rear trigger is solely for the lower shotgun barrel. Triple barrel locking is achieved through a Greener cross bolt and two underlugs with a Purdey-style frame.
